Founded in 1872, the Tokyo National Museum is Japan's oldest and largest museum, housing over 120,000 works of Japanese and Asian art. Its five exhibition buildings in Ueno Park include the striking Honkan (Japanese Gallery) and the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. The collection spans ancient Jomon pottery to Edo-period ukiyo-e, with 89 National Treasures.
