About Art in Japan
Our Mission
We help art lovers discover Japan's incredible art scene — from traditional museums to cutting-edge contemporary galleries.
What We Do
We curate and map art museums, galleries, and installations across Japan. Each listing includes exhibition info, artist highlights, and visitor tips.
Coverage
Our database covers art spaces across all 47 prefectures of Japan, including iconic venues like Naoshima and teamLab.
How It Works
Every art space in our database has been individually researched and verified. We gather information from official museum websites, cultural institution databases, and on-site visits. Each listing includes exhibition details, visiting hours, admission prices, accessibility information, and directions. We update our data regularly to ensure you have accurate information for planning your cultural visits. You can search by location, art space type (museum, gallery, installation, architecture), or browse by tags to discover spaces that match your interests.
Why We Built This
Japan's art scene is one of the world's most diverse, spanning ancient temple art collections to cutting-edge digital installations on remote islands. Yet finding English-language information about smaller galleries, regional museums, and temporary exhibitions can be surprisingly difficult. We created Art in Japan to bridge this gap — making Japan's incredible artistic heritage accessible to international art lovers, whether they're planning their first trip or their fiftieth.
Community
Art in Japan is built for the global community of art enthusiasts who love Japanese creativity. If you discover an art space that should be listed, notice outdated information, or want to share your experience, we'd love to hear from you. Your contributions help make this resource more complete and accurate for everyone. Together, we're building the most comprehensive English-language guide to art spaces in Japan.
How we choose art spaces
Art in Japan is not a raw directory of museum names. We prioritize the context that helps a visitor decide whether a place is worth the trip: architectural significance, collection focus, exhibition cadence, transit access, and how the space fits into a broader day in the area.
- We highlight factors that meaningfully change the visit, such as outdoor installations, architecture, and permanent collection strength.
- We separate evergreen venue details from seasonal exhibition information that goes stale faster.
- Corrections from institutions, curators, and visitors are folded into the next editorial review.
