Japan's oldest public art gallery, renovated by Jun Aoki, featuring Japanese and Western modern art.
Originally opened in 1933 as the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, this is Japan's oldest public art museum building. It underwent a major renovation by Jun Aoki in 2020, adding a striking glass ribbon facade while preserving the original Imperial Crown-style architecture. The museum showcases modern and contemporary Japanese art, with particular strength in Kyoto-school nihonga painting and the Kyoto art scene.
