Originally opened in 1933 as the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, this is Japan's oldest public art museum building. It underwent a major renovation by Jun Aoki in 2020, adding a striking glass ribbon facade while preserving the original Imperial Crown-style architecture. The museum showcases modern and contemporary Japanese art, with particular strength in Kyoto-school nihonga painting and the Kyoto art scene.
