Tadao Ando-designed museum in Akita featuring Fujita Tsuguharu's massive murals. Striking architecture with a spiral gallery. Open Tue–Sun.
The Akita Museum of Art, designed by Tadao Ando, is home to Leonard Foujita's monumental painting "Events in Akita," a 3.65 by 20.5-meter canvas that is one of the largest paintings in the world. The museum's triangular reflecting pool and minimalist concrete architecture create a contemplative setting. Foujita (Tsuguharu Fujita) painted this masterwork in just 15 days in 1937, depicting Akita's festivals and daily life.
