SANAA設計の直島フェリーターミナル。アートの島への玄関口。
The Naoshima Ferry Terminal, a minimalist architectural marvel in Kagawa, Japan, serves as the primary gateway to Naoshima's renowned art island. Rather than housing traditional art collections, the terminal itself stands as a dynamic exhibition of contemporary design by architects SANAA. Its seamless integration with the surrounding seascape and the nearby iconic Red Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama transforms the very act of arrival and departure into an immersive artistic experience, setting the stage for Naoshima's unique blend of art and natural beauty. Characterized by its delicate, almost ethereal presence, the terminal comprises several interconnected, glass-enclosed pavilions. A lightweight steel framework supports expansive glass walls that blur the distinction between interior and exterior, inviting natural light and panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. This transparent design allows the building to recede, reflecting the sky and water, making it feel less like a rigid structure and more like a fluid space that breathes with its environment. The design prioritizes openness and connectivity, creating a sense of calm and clarity. Arriving at Naoshima's Miyanoura Port, visitors are immediately enveloped by an atmosphere of tranquility and refined modernity. The terminal offers a welcoming, unhindered transition from the ferry to the island, providing sheltered waiting areas, ticketing services, and a small shop, all while maintaining an unobstructed connection to the picturesque surroundings. This thoughtful design ensures a smooth, aesthetically pleasing start or conclusion to any journey to Naoshima, enhancing the overall impression of an island dedicated to art and thoughtful living.
